CKPower reduces greenhouse gas emissions, moving toward CKP NET ZERO 2050
"We are a pioneer of renewables-based electricity generation in
the Southeast Asia region and are committed to making
CKPower a Net Zero Emissions company. We're moving towards
that goal in very tangible and measurable ways."
Mr. Thanawat Trivisvavet,
Managing Director, CKPower Public Company Limited
Bangkok (5 Nov 2024) – CKPower Public Company Limited (SET: CKP), one of the region's largest producers of electricity from renewables, revealed that, in 2023, the company's performance in energy management and greenhouse gas emissions resulted in the release of only 0.0691 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) of greenhouse gases per megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity produced, which is 86% lower than the national average (Thailand Grid) of 0.4999 tCO2e/MWh. In the first half of 2024, emissions were reported to be 83% lower. In addition, it is forecasted that throughout 2024, emissions will be 87% below the national average for greenhouse gas emissions per unit of electricity produced.
The company has been continuously developing innovations to reduce energy consumption and enhancing the efficiency of electricity production and various processes within the organisation. Throughout 2023, the company successfully reduced total energy consumption by 5,101 MWh (equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2,051 tCO2e),which is comparable to turning off lights in Bangkok (Earth Hour 2024) for 186 hours. In the first half of 2024, the company further reduced energy consumption by 2,883 MWh (equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1,313 tCO2e), or the equivalent of turning off lights in Bangkok for 119 hours. These efforts represent a significant contribution to the power generation sector and help propel Thailand towards a low-carbon society.
Mr. Thanawat Trivisvavet, Managing Director, CKPower Public Company Limited, said that we are committed to moving forward towards the goal of achieving the 'CKP NET ZERO EMISSIONS 2050' plan to become an organisation that emits net zero greenhouse gases by 2050. The important factor that enables CKPower to achieve the goal is to increase the efficiency of the electricity generation process. The company has a long-term plan focusing on expanding investment in projects that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as studying electricity generation from hydrogen fuel mixed with natural gas in combined cycle power plants, in line with Thailand's energy transition according to the draft Power Development Plan of Thailand 2024 - 2037 (PDP2024). In the first 6 months of 2024, the company was able to increase the efficiency of energy use in electricity generation better than the target by 0.86%. In addition to managing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the efficiency of electricity generation, the company has increased its use of renewable energy within the organisation. This includes transitioning to electric and hybrid vehicles for transportation within the office and power plants.
"Over the past two years, CKPower has successfully raised the proportion of electricity generation from renewable sources. Our installed capacity from renewable energy was 89%, and today it has increased to 93%. We have supplied approximately 8.5 million megawatt-hours of clean energy to Thailand, or around 17% of the total clean electricity used in country. In 2023, the company helped avoid the emission of approximately 4.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent," Mr. Thanawat concluded.
